The Sonic Movie had a lot of backlash when original exposed to the world, for those that missed the controversy, the original character design was… Something to be desired.
The development team quickly acted on the character redesign, which probably saved the entire movie from flopping completely. Which played much to the success of both movies, helping the franchise prosper.
Being a big fan of the original 90’s inception, NGON produced this fun piece purely to create something cinematic and in light of the movies production team, NGON conceptualised what it would be like to introduce the series moved beloved villain, Metal Sonic.

Creation of the main environment was complex and detailed with 3D scanned objects and replicated plant life to add interest to the scene.
These scenes were then split out into numerous sections and rendered independently of each other for ease of post-processing. This allows the footage to be modified quickly and add in various special effects like electricity sparks, light particles, etc. This method is pretty standard with production companies, simply because it allows the design and development side to be far more efficient and to cut down on render time.
There has been quite a few easter eggs and nods to various aspects of Sonic history, as there should be considering ‘easter eggs’ were probably favoured more in the gaming industry.
First, yes he has a mouth. This is a nod back to the original concept art being misunderstood by the US illustrator team, a shine on his face plate was believed to be a mouth and unfortunately went to print.
Next, the poem, or lyrics Metal speaks throughout is actually from the only theme song that he ever had, originally from Crush 40 for Sonic Heroes. A sinister twist gave Metal in this trailer, the perfect easter egg for hardcore fans.
This leads onto Metal’s stomach turbine. NGON developed this area to house his analysing UI. He has always been infamous for relentlessly stalking the Sonic heroes, stealing their data to become invincible. And the UI shows that only 10% has been currently retrieved, forcing him to continue his search.
The last scene in the trailer reveals Metal in full force as he turns to the camera, showing his Knightrider-esk mouth movement, mist blows around as he turns, showing his turbine now fully activated. Behind, we see another easter egg involving Metals first appearance in the mid 90’s game Sonic CD. ‘Little Planet’ also made its first appearance, which was where the game was set and the upgraded design still maintains its massive chain as the invasion begins.
